Frequently Asked Questions

Why choose hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy has long been recognised to be a very powerful method for personal development. In fact, it is known to have been in use for the last 6,000 years. Today, all around the world, people use the power of hypnosis to help deal with a vast range of problems. Everyone experiences hypnosis regularly. Hypnosis is simply a state of heightened relaxation and altered awareness.
When you are relaxed in this way it is possible to make contact with your subconscious mind, in order to effect change in your life. The subconscious is an untapped resource for creativity. The subconscious mind is the seat of all your emotions and therefore directs nearly all your behaviour. Most importantly the subconscious is responsible for maintaining the body in good health and for all the autonomic processes, e.g., breathing, blood circulation, tissue repair and controlling blood sugar level.

Will I be unconscious?

There is a lot of confusion about the word unconscious. Because hypnotherapy deals with the unconscious mind this leaves a realm of ambiguity around the word unconscious. If you were unconscious you would not be able to hear the suggestion from the hypnotherapist. Hypnotherapy is a state of calm, relaxed, focused attention creating suggestions and commands directed to your unconscious mind for conscious change.

Will I be made to do silly things like those you see on stage or TV?

No, of course not! You will always be treated with the utmost respect, and your confidentiality will be safeguarded. Entertainment hypnosis relies on compliance, expectation from the audience and perception of what the audience expects. In fact, if you should choose to go to an entertainment hypnotist, you are going with the express intention of having fun and being asked to do silly things.

I don't like the idea of having my mind controlled.

It won't be. You will be in control at all times. Within each human being there is a protective mechanism of ethics, values, beliefs and identities, which protect you as an individual.

What if I can't be hypnotised?

Don't worry. The only people who can't be hypnotised are those who don't want to be hypnotised. Everyone else can be hypnotised, but the depths and response levels do differ from person to person.

What does hypnosis feel like?

You are deeply relaxed and calm, aware of everything happening around you. It is a pleasant and enjoyable state, very similar to daydreaming or drifting off to sleep. You will feel wonderfully relaxed and you may find that your sleep will be of a much better quality.

Does hypnosis really work?

Yes. Hypnosis has been shown in studies to be the most effective method of stopping smoking and losing weight. It has been used for hundreds of years for anesthesia in surgery and is one of the most effective and fastest cures for fears and phobias available today.

Can the hypnotist control me?

The simple answer is no. Before I start a session I always show my clients how to emerge by themselves. The client is always in control always has the option of stopping a session if they want.

Will I be asleep?

No. Hypnosis has nothing to do with sleep. You are actually more aware of what is going on around you when in hypnosis than you normally would be.

What happens if I don’t wake up?

There is nothing to wake up from. You will not be asleep.

How many sessions does it take?

For quitting smoking, normally it takes 1 session . For weight loss it is generally 2 to 3 sessions. For other general changes it takes normally 1 session unless the case is severe it make take more. Other cases such as a stammer or stutter etc can take a few sessions. If you want to make a positive change in your life, or have any questions please phone or email me.

Will I remember the session?

In general you will remember the whole session. But just like watching a movie, if your mind wanders or you daydream you may forget parts of the session.

Will I reveal personal information I don’t want to?

No. You are more aware than normal and you will only reveal what you want to.

Can children be treated with hypnotherapy?

Yes, children can be treated using hypnotherapy from the age of about six, provided they have a good attention span. A parent or gaurdian must be present during the hypnotherapy session at all times.

What happens in a hypnosis session

Each session is tailored to the individual clients needs but this is a general guide. The client is guided into a state of mental and physical relaxation. (You are not asleep). Acceptable positive suggestions will then be given to the subconscious mind to change the old thought patterns to new thought patterns that the client wants. This may last from 60 to 90 minutes depending on what we are working on to change. At the end of the session the client is emerged with these new thought patterns established.

Firstly, any misconceptions a potential patient may have about hypnosis should be dispelled.  The technique does not involve the patient being put into a deep sleep, and the patient cannot be made to do anything they would not ordinarily do.   They remain fully aware of their surroundings and situation, and are not vulnerable to every given command of the therapist.  The important thing is that the patient wants to change some behavioral habit or addiction and is highly motivated to do so.  They have to want the treatment to work. For example, a patient who consciously wants to overcome their fear of spiders may try everything they consciously can to do it, but will still fail as long as their subconscious mind retains this terror and prevents the patient from succeeding.  Progress can only be made by reprogramming the subconscious so that deep-seated instincts and beliefs are abolished or altered.
